I know it’s hard to rise above all the haters especially in this day and age but you can do it; you are better than they are. Humans that are hell-bent on hating you are going to try to goat you into a reply so you’ll bite but don’t play their game. Words are their weapon of choice. I know that words can cut you to your core and haters love to twist them up or add insults and sarcasm and it hurts.
Trolls like to hate for a few reasons:
- Boredom – What a ridiculous reason right? They have nothing better to do than to hate on others because of their own insecurity. When they catch a person in their net, it gives them some power and they like it. Their life is now important. If they work or are just busy then they have no time to troll
- Attention grabbers – When the light is shined on them, that’s when they thrive. Haters will post negative comments anywhere online with the hope that you will re-post it so they get some twisted sense of notoriety. Once you respond, you’ll feel compelled to, they are now fed.
We feel we have to respond to this because they shouldn’t be able to get away with treating others the way they do. It’s the same as driving, when you feel the other driver has done something wrong, we want to respond with some type of negativity. Screaming at them or the ‘all to familiar’ finger. That said, if we stay silent its like they have won and we are conceding. The really unfortunate part is that they will never be stopped. You may be able to stop one or two and that’s great short-term however others will come.
Unfortunately this is the world we live in today and it will continue to be like this until they are stopped. Now that trolls have realized with the help of social media they can do whatever they want, say whatever they choose and to whom ever they decide to abuse that particular day. It’s a free-for-all.
Ignoring them is the best thing to do. Remember when you were a child on the playground and little Johnny kept saying mean things to you? Mom said “just ignore him and he’ll leave you alone”. Most of the time that did work. Trying that may work now. Today, little Johnny has a million more ways to come at you, not just the one choice on the playground.
Long ago, there was a fictitious alien race called Borg. The Borg were known for their hostile take overs of another species spaceship. One of their catchphrases was “resistance is futile”. If you give in to the abuse, the trolls now have you hooked just like the Borg did. Best thing to do is ignore, ignore, ignore.
Occasionally it may not be a rude troll but a criticism that is hard to decipher. Criticism is fine, sometimes you need a punch in the arm to realize that you might be the wrongdoer. If your unsure, ask what they mean, they will be glad you did and now know you weren’t deliberately being a jerk. In that case, show understanding and apologize with sincerity.
It takes work to not care about what others think of you. Best thing to do is to make them irrelevant and unimportant, this way to can put your well-being first. Rise above them because you are better than they are.
